Afghanistan Today

We asked some of HPR’s brightest minds what they think about Afghanistan, now ten years after the start of the war. What's next for Central Asia as the U.S. winds down its commitments? What's been forgotten and what should the U.S. learn from this involvement?

Hearts and Minds

By Oreoluwa Babarinsa

After a decade in Afghanistan, the U.S. needs cut its losses and start to reduce it’s involvement in Central Asia. In the wake of Karzai’s declaration of siding with Pakistan in the event of a U.S.-Pakistan war, it’s more than apparent that even the people who are nominally on ‘our side’ aren’t exactly full-throated American allies. We aren’t winning enough ‘hearts and minds’ to remotely justify our continued presence in the region. So, the sooner we can get our forces back home and do a critical assessment of what happened in Central Asia, the better off we’ll be.
